McDonalds vs Burger King, both being American food Franchise in the food chain industry, established themselves as the largest and the second-largest Food Franchise all across the world respectively.
Both of them deal in their own specialized hamburgers, Big Mac being the best-selling hamburger of McDonald’s whereas Whopper being the most loved hamburger of Burger King.
McDonalds has over 37,000 outlets serving across 119 countries. With its headquarter set up in Oak Brook, Illinois in 1955, this first franchised restaurant has now been converted into a museum.
Burger King, on the other hand, is operating 14,000 outlets across 100 countries. The headquarters of Burger King, established in 1954, are located in Miami, Florida.
McDonalds in India: The Big Mac of Food Chain Industry
McDonald’s is the world’s largest food-chain Franchise. It was founded in 1954 by two brothers named Maurice and Richard McDonald as a hamburger and milkshake joint. Later, in 1955, Ray Kroc purchased the rights to operate it as a Franchise.
McDonald’s launched its first restaurant in India in 1996. The joint-venture is run by two Indians named Amit Jatia who owns food chains of McDonald’s in the west and south India, and Vikram Bakshi who is responsible for operating food chains in North and East India.
Today, McDonald’s operates over 160 restaurants across the country, serving top quality products which are organic in nature.
The ingredients for the whole food chain is
supplied from within India itself. Amit and his partners came up with their own specialized burger and named it the Chicken Maharajah Mac.
They also introduced an “Aloo Tikki” burger at a reasonable price of Rs. 20 and it was an instant hit among the Indian population.

Burger King in India: The Rising Star
Burger King was acquired in 1954 by James W. McLamore and David Edgerton and its name was changed from “Insta-Burger King” to “Burger King”.
Since then it went on numerous changes of ownership from TPG Capital to Bain Capital to Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and finally to 3G Capital.
Burger King entered India almost after two decades of McDonald’s setting up in India. The CEO of Burger King India is Rajeev Verman. The first Burger King restaurant was opened at Select City Walk Mall in South Delhi on November 9, 2014.
Before entering into India, Burger King launched a pre-campaign to introduce the concept of “Whopper” in India, which is the best selling burger of its franchise all over the world, through Facebook and Twitter.
Just like McDonald’s, Burger King introduced a vegetarian menu for the Indian population including vegetarian sandwiches, and vegetarian snackers. Apart from this, instead of including beef, it offered Mutton and Chicken Whoppers and burgers.
Figures and Numbers: What’s the Difference?
McDonald’s vs Burger King are indisputably the biggest competition and rivals in the fast-food chain industry.
Number of Restaurants:
McDonald’s has over 160 restaurants across India whereas Burger King has only 16 restaurants in the country. According to the CEO of Burger King, they are planning to launch around 30-40 new restaurants in the coming year.
McDonalds Vs Burger King Sales:
As mentioned earlier, the Big Mac and Whopper are the best-selling burgers of McDonald’s and Burger King respectively. According to sources, McDonald’s sales during the pandemic is almost 70% of pre-COVID sales whereas Burger King has reported sales of Rs. 8412.38 Cr in 2020.
Market cap:
Currently, McDonald’s market cap is around Rs 7,229.96 Cr in 2020. Burger King, on the other hand, has surpassed McDonald’s in India in this aspect with a market cap of Rs 7,600 crore.
Valuation
In 2020, McDonald’s was valued at a total of almost $130.36 billion with total assets of $47.5 billion. Burger King, on the other hand, is valued at a total of $7.1 billion.
McDonalds Vs Burger King Revenue
As of March 2020, McDonald’s has an annual revenue of Rs. 1,547.8 Cr with a profit of Rs. 36.6 Cr whereas Burger King has an annual revenue of Rs. 841.2 Cr with a loss of Rs. 76.6 Cr.
